Job Description

Purpose of the Role

The Professor of Practice exists to design and facilitate high-quality, job-embedded learning experiences that support candidate success while modeling ethical, culturally competent instruction and models of patient care. This role advances Reach’s mission by transforming workplace experience into rigorous, reflective academic learning.

Team & Reporting

  • Location: Remote

  • Status: Part-time Faculty / Adjunct (or Full-time Faculty, if applicable)

Experience & Approach We’re Looking For
  • Deep experience in Behavioral Healthcare with at least 5 years as a licensed/certified provider or 5 years experience teaching at the college/community college level.

  • Meets WAC 296-05-003.14 Competent Instructor criteria

  • Has worked in an SUD setting and has held an SUDP credential or the equivalent (i.e. CADC)
  • Skill in facilitating adult learning, preferably in virtual or online environments.

  • Clear, professional communication and a strong commitment to candidate engagement.

  • A coaching mindset grounded in inquiry, reflection, and relationship-building.

  • Comfort working within academic policies, systems, and expectations.

An instructor providing related/supplemental instruction who has demonstrated satisfactory performance in the occupation for a minimum of three years beyond the customary learning period for that occupation and who:

(a) Meets the requirements of the state board for community and technical colleges for a vocational-technical instructor; or

(b) Is recognized within an industry as having expertise in a specific occupation and is a subject matter expert; and

(c) Has training in teaching techniques and adult learning styles. The training may be acquired before, or within one year after, the competent instructor begins to provide related/supplemental instruction.

Key Areas of Focus

This role is focused on outcomes and contribution, not an exhaustive list of tasks.

1. Teaching & Learning Design
  • Deliver high-quality instruction in assigned courses that centers candidate engagement and success.

  • Design and facilitate synchronous and asynchronous learning experiences grounded in adult learning principles.

  • Develop and adapt course materials, assignments, and assessments to meet program goals.

2. Coaching & Candidate Support
  • Provide individualized coaching and mentorship to candidates.

  • Engage in regular coaching cycles, including lesson review, feedback, and reflective conversations.

  • Identify candidates who may be at risk and communicate early with advisors and program partners.

3. Faculty Engagement & Continuous Improvement
  • Participate in faculty learning communities, onboarding, and required professional development.

  • Collaborate with colleagues on program innovation, assessment cycles, and curriculum improvement.

  • Contribute to shared learning and reflection across the faculty community.

Potential Courses:

  • Liberal Studies Courses: English Composition (Clinical Documentation), Oral Communication, Earth Science, Law and Ethics, Computer Literacy, Quantitative Reasoning, Intro to Literature, Health Equity

  • SUDP Courses: Behavioral Health (Pharmacology), Psychology, Counseling, Crisis Management, Trauma-Informed Care


Collaboration & Communication
  • Works closely with: Deans, Program Leads, Advisors, Faculty Colleagues, Academic Operations

  • May support or guide: Candidates and peer faculty through informal mentorship or collaboration

  • Participates in: Faculty meetings, onboarding sessions, professional learning communities, and program working groups

Compensation: Professors of Practice will make $1,500 per course credit as a contractor with Reach University.
