Role Description

As a Government Underwriter, you’ll play a vital role in ensuring eLEND’s commitment to responsible lending and loan quality. You’ll evaluate and approve government-backed mortgage loans — including FHA, VA, and USDA — with precision and compliance expertise. Your work directly impacts eLEND’s reputation for accuracy, consistency, and trust with borrowers and investors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze loan applications, credit reports, income and asset documentation, appraisals, and all supporting data for accuracy and compliance.
  • Review loan-to-value (LTV) and debt-to-income (DTI) ratios to determine borrower creditworthiness.
  • Calculate borrower income and evaluate residential appraisals for FHA, VA, and USDA loans.
  • Identify and address potential credit or collateral risks early in the process.
  • Communicate efficiently with processors, loan officers, and internal partners to obtain missing documentation or clarify details.
  • Ensure complete and accurate loan file data integrity prior to approval.
  • Review and mitigate Quality Control (QC) findings, providing coaching or corrective guidance where appropriate.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of government lending guidelines, investor requirements, and regulatory changes.
  • Collaborate closely with setup, processing, sales, and closing teams to ensure a smooth, timely loan experience.
  • Communicate underwriting decisions and conditions clearly to internal and external partners.
  • Uphold eLEND’s compliance standards and ensure adherence to all applicable federal, state, and investor regulations.

Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of FHA, VA, and USDA underwriting guidelines.
  • Knowledge of conventional mortgage products and investor requirements.
  • High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and analytical thinking.
  • Excellent decision-making, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in mortgage loan origination systems (Encompass preferred).
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining alignment with team objectives.
  • Adaptability to a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
  • Commitment to quality, integrity, and superior customer service.

Growth Path

  • Senior Government Underwriter
  • Credit Risk Analyst
  • Underwriting Team Lead or Manager
  • Compliance or Quality Control roles

Compensation & Benefits

  • $41.00–$44.00/hour (competitive based on experience and designations)
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision benefits
  • 401(k) plan
  • Generous PTO and paid holidays
  • Fully remote opportunity with flexible scheduling
  • Career development within eLEND’s growing underwriting and credit risk functions
