Job Description
Position Summary
Michigan FIRE (MF) / Michigan FIRE Action (MFA) is hiring an Organizing Director to lead our field strategy in Michigan. This role will train and supervise the Regional Organizers (ROs), as well as plan, execute, and track MF/MFA’s cultural organizing, meeting people in their cultural spaces, base building, and eventual electoral and political programs with a culture-first approach statewide. This role is for someone with the discipline and skills to think strategically, act decisively, and organize.
We’re looking for someone who can craft an innovative organizing strategy for building youth and BIPOC power in the state, with data-informed goals, a culture and community first mindset, and specific timelines to accomplish our goals, strategize on how we meet them, and ensure that the organization is maintaining a consistent, compelling, and effective community building and engagement plan.
The strongest candidates will be those who are energized by talking to new people, passionate about civic power, and eager to turn our targeted regions into hubs of youth democratic participation. They will be bold, creative, and deeply committed to meeting young people where they are and have experience leading successful organizing efforts.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the development and execution of MF/MFA’s Michigan-specific organizing strategy. Centering youth, BIPOC, and working class community and identity building, civic education, and membership base building keeping cultural organizing, meeting people in their cultural spaces, and a culture-first approach at the center of the organizing strategy.
- Design and oversee a statewide culture building, community building, and organizing campaign, in coordination with the State Director while overseeing the Regional Organizers and the Community Coordinators, that grows youth and BIPOC power, builds permanent, sustainable grassroots youth infrastructure.
- Manage a theory of change that starts with a ladder of engagement built around permeating trust, identity, and community building that escalates later into taking electoral and political action.
- Supervise, coach, and set clear goals for the Regional Organizers and the Community Coordinators, ensuring alignment with Michigan FIRE’s organizational priorities.
- Develop and facilitate a training program for staff, members, and volunteers while holding regular best practice sessions, and cultivate professional development for the Regional Organizers, Community Coordinators, and member/volunteer youth leaders.
- Conduct regular 1:1 meetings to provide mentorship, accountability, and professional development support for the Regional Organizers and the Community Coordinators.
- Track, analyze, and report on program data to assess impact, identify trends, and refine organizing strategies for our community and identity building efforts and an eventual electoral program.
- Enforce data quality control standards while providing training and coaching to the Regional Organizers and the Community Coordinators on data best practices as needed.
- Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and growth-oriented team culture that centers racial equity, belonging, and youth leadership development.
- Cultivate strong relationships with aligned partners, elected officials, student organizations, and youth-led movements to expand civic participation and counter voter suppression efforts.
- Provide and support regular internal communications related to progress-to-goals.
Key Qualifications:
- Strategic Organizing: At least 4+ years of experience in campus, community, and/or electoral organizing ideally with direct experience in Michigan progressive campaigns.
- Youth Organizing & Civic Engagement: Proven leadership or advisory roles in successful youth-centered membership building programs with voter engagement campaigns (c3 and/or c4), and a strong commitment to centering BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and working-class youth in political strategy and decision-making.
- Coalition Building & Communication: Skilled relationship-builder with fluency in both grassroots and institutional spaces. Strong communicator and political educator, capable of translating complex strategies for youth and varied audiences.
- Project & Time Management: Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects with tight deadlines, shifting priorities, and remote team structures. Self-starter comfortable working independently, including long or irregular hours and travel as needed.
- Progressive Infrastructure & Data Fluency: Familiarity with data ecosystems (e.g., State Voices, America Votes, The Movement Cooperative, Analyst Institute), and experience working with underrepresented communities. Understanding of the limitations of traditional political datasets in organizing these communities.
- Technical & Analytical Skills: Comfort with technology/virtual platforms, including Zoom, Google Hangouts, Slack, Asana, etc. Experience with SQL, relational databases, Google Sheets/Excel formulas, and platforms like Civis and BigQuery. Skilled in creating automated reports using tools like Looker, Tableau, or Google Sheets, and managing data pipelines and GitHub documentation.
- Tool Implementation & Training: Administrator-level experience with voter contact and organizing tools (VAN, ThruText, Hustle, Reach, etc.). Comfortable training diverse audiences on technical tools and explaining data problems in accessible ways.

- Be comfortable approaching strangers, be eager to talk to as many young adults as possible.
- Have a passion for civic engagement and inspiring young people to get involved.
