Role Description

At Mercury, members of our Product Management Team are responsible for driving profitable growth in their assigned states and line of business (Personal Lines Auto, Property or Commercial insurance).

The primary job function for this position is to lead the research and development of personal property products (Homeowner and Landlord).

The Director of Research and Development is responsible for shaping personal property product strategy and owning the design, rating, and development of new and enhanced homeowner products. The Director will partner with Actuaries, Climate and Catastrophe Science, State Product Management, Underwriting and other stakeholders to drive profitable growth of personal property products.

Responsibilities

  • Leadership and management responsibilities of the R&D Team.
  • Leads team members, provides training opportunities, recruits, manages talent development, performance management, compensation decisions, and staff planning within R&D team.
  • Develops various levels of R&D Managers and Analysts.
  • Leads the decision-making process for evaluation of new ideas and pricing positions.
  • Works closely with senior management to set out strategic plans for product development and execution.
  • Directs data research and statistical analyses to solve problems.
  • Takes initiative in every aspect of product research, including initiating the research, planning and coordinating resources, conducting research, leading implementation, and monitoring product performance.
  • Prioritizes product development projects.
  • Partners with colleagues and other divisions to implement changes in pricing and product models and product enhancements.
  • Confirms integration with Underwriting, Marketing and other divisions to ensure process improvement.
  • Reviews and considers research plans and results.
  • Reviews identified issues and recommended solutions and product enhancements.
  • Reviews completed analyses of competitor pricing, product features, and service levels.
  • Monitors product training as necessary throughout the organization.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree required with an emphasis in an analytical concentration such as math, statistics, economics, finance, quantitative research, etc.
  • Master’s Degree preferred.
  • 8+ years experience in P&C Insurance industry preferred.
  • 7+ years leadership experience in R&D or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Advanced analytical and quantitative skills required.
  • Strong track record of demonstrated creativity in pricing and product development.
  • Advanced critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to review highly complex issues that may have a significant financial impact on the Company and develop strategic solutions.
  • Must have initiative and be a self-starter.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to build commitment to decisions.
  • Must have excellent team building and staff development skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Excel and MS Access required.
