Role Description

We are seeking a Teaching Fellow SEE - Online who understands, appreciates, and applies an instructional style that emphasizes the process of problem-solving rather than memorizing material. The object is to engage students by getting them to think and participate rather than being lectured to.

  • Teaching Fellows must be present and available during the entire course, including the daily synchronous 3-hour session.
  • Coordinate with the teaching team, grade student submissions, check student messages daily outside of class time, and hold occasional study sessions.
  • Prepare independently by reviewing course materials and completing the online training program prior to the first day of the course.
  • Comfortable with the course material and able to relate the curriculum to high school students.
  • Work with the Instructor to develop a sense of community for the high school students participating in the class.
  • Assist students remotely as they conduct various activities throughout the course.
  • Monitor discussion boards and answer student messages in less than 24 hours.
  • Create additional videos as needed to clarify/demonstrate lab setups or fill instructional gaps.
  • Assist Instructors to ensure students receive graded assignments promptly (within 1-2 days) and provide detailed feedback.
  • Ensure grades are posted to the learning management system in a timely manner.
  • Uphold child safety protocols.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math Discipline.
  • Availability to teach June 29 to July 31, Monday through Friday.
  • Availability to participate in pre-course training.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent.

Requirements

  • Candidates will be subject to a pre-employment background check and fingerprinting per policies related to working with minors.
  • All employees participating in Hopkins Pre-College programs must enroll and participate in mandatory online training relevant to working with minors and working at JHU.
  • Each class will meet synchronously for a single 3-hour block at the same time each day during one of the following time intervals: 9am – noon, 2-5pm, 7pm-10pm (all Baltimore local times).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in engineering preferred.
  • Three plus years of experience as a high school teacher in a STEM discipline.

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • Excellent classroom management skills.
  • Knowledge of Algebra II and Trigonometry.
  • Knowledge of Physics.

Technical qualifications or specialized certifications

  • Familiarity with Canvas or similar LMS.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams.
  • Proficient with Zoom or similar video conferencing software.
