Job Description
• Lead and manage a team of data engineers, typically 5 to 8 direct reports
• Actively contribute to development and implementation of data engineering solutions (50–60% hands-on coding)
• Address engineering culture pain points and provide coaching and feedback to direct reports
• Drive employee retention, resourcing, learning management, presales, feedback gathering, QA, and internal engineering processes
• Foster team growth, pair with engineers to solve challenges, and ensure sustainable data engineering coverage across engagements
• Advocate for and protect team time for internal projects
• Push for sustainable technical architectural decisions with a long-term approach
• Recruit, train, supervise and support development of team members and conduct performance reviews
• Work with clients to build infrastructure guidelines, implement data engineering tools, and ensure consistency and security of data products
• Support Tier 1 client engagements and translate client business needs into engineering requirements
• Advise clients on tool selection and implement engineering solutions using best practices
• Contribute to internal and external resources (e.g., internal wiki, blog posts)
• Plan for sustainable team growth and lead hiring based on hiring plans
• Support day-to-day execution and be accountable for availability, reliability, and quality of systems
• Collaborate with data analytics, analytics engineering, and data solutions teams to achieve client goals
• Guide the team in successful and timely execution of project deliverables
Job Requirements
- Intermediate / expert proficiency with cloud data warehouses (e.g., Snowflake, Databricks, Azure)
- Intermediate / expert proficiency with common data integration / orchestration platforms (e.g., concepts like CDC, ELT and tools such as Fivetran, DLT, Azure Data Factory, Apache Airflow)
- Experience mentoring and advising other engineers
- Experience with optimizing resource allocation by assessing team members' strengths and assigning tasks according to their expertise, while promoting skill growth
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Experience leading a team of data engineers (typically 5 to 8 direct reports)
- 50–60% hands-on coding required
- Experience recruiting, training, supervising and conducting performance reviews
- Ability to select, configure and implement engineering solutions and tools using best practices
- Advising clients on selection of data engineering tools, systems, and approaches
- Contributing advanced engineering skills to client engagements
