Role Description
The GCG Automation & Factory Solutions Field Services team is growing, and we are now seeking a Sr Automation Field Service Engineer to help us expand our service offerings and support customers across the Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky region!
In this role, you will serve as a technical expert in automation controls and related electrical components, supporting customers from project start to finish—including:
- Hardware selection
- Troubleshooting
- Programming
- On-site commissioning
You will also play an important role in internal training and mentorship, helping elevate the overall technical capabilities of our team. This position is ideal for a self-motivated engineer who enjoys working in the field, solving problems, and contributing to automation success across a wide range of industries.
For this role, we are seeking candidates in the Central / Southern OH area to accommodate ease of travel to customer sites around Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. When not engaged in work-related travel to customer sites or corporate facilities, this position offers a remote work arrangement; however, travel could be as much as 75% depending on work volume.
Qualifications
- Associate’s degree in Engineering (Electrical or Electrical Engineering Technology), a technical degree, or equivalent industry experience (Required)
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering or equivalent 4-year post-secondary education (Preferred)
- 4 years of industry experience working with automation controls and electrical components (Required)
- 5+ years of experience including customer-facing support of PLCs, motion control, sensors, safety devices, and fluid power systems (Preferred)
- Background in working with electrical distributors, engineers, and industrial clients is highly desirable
- Strong knowledge of automation systems, component selection, and programming
- Proficiency with vendor configuration tools for product sizing and selection
- Ability to present technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Positive attitude, strong math and computer skills, and a goal-oriented mindset
- Knowledge of motion systems, trigonometry, calculus, and technical writing (Preferred)
Requirements
- Troubleshoot, program, and commission automation control systems (PLCs, HMIs, motion systems, etc.)
- Assist customers in selecting appropriate automation hardware and building bills of materials (BOMs)
- Execute and manage multiple service projects throughout their lifecycle
- Provide on-site and remote technical support, ensuring timely and high-quality service delivery
- Present and promote automation solutions to customers and prospects
- Conduct technical training sessions for customers and internal staff on electrical and automation products
- Stay up to date on industry trends and technologies by attending technical trainings and vendor sessions
- Work closely with sales, customer service, and vendor partners to ensure seamless customer experiences
- Act as a mentor and technical coach to junior team members, helping them grow their skills
- Contribute to knowledge-sharing across the service team and support the standardization of best practices
