College Counselor (Remote)
Position Overview
Dwight Global Online School, which was recently named the #1 best online high school in the United States by niche.com. Dwight Global Online School is seeking an experienced and innovative college counselor.
The ideal candidate is a flexible and innovative team player with a gift for igniting the spark of genius in online students around the world. Dwight Global is seeking a self-directed, energetic, and empathetic College Counselor to guide 25-30 individual students yearly in the application process and to participate in the ongoing development, programming, and work of the College Counseling Office. This is a junior counselor position and prior HS experience is not required. Higher Ed admissions experience is preferred. The ideal candidate will start by June 2026.
Responsibilities
- Works alongside the DG College Counseling team in building and leading programs, new initiatives and workshops that educate and inform students and parents from grades 9-12
- Attend weekly staff meetings and additional student-specific and administrative meetings each week
- Attend an annual in-person orientation in September, most likely in NYC.
- Work closely with the Director of College Counseling, College Counselors, and Upper School administration to guide assigned students yearly through all aspects of the college exploration and application process starting in January of the student’s Grade 11 year.
- While doing so:
- Maintain a professional level of sensitivity to different family cultures and dynamics.
- Display a commitment to diversity and create a culture of equity, inclusion, and belonging.
- Help students self-assess and research higher education and other post-secondary opportunities
- Counsel students and parents about college options and guide in the development of a balanced college list
- Support GAP Year students in Post-HS/Career Options
- Plan standardized testing strategies
- Develop and write official school letters of recommendations
- Assist with all aspects of the financial aid process
- Support students in all stages of the essay writing process, from brainstorming topics to essay reviews to final draft reviews
- Review college applications and transcripts prior to submitting schools materials to colleges and universities
- Raise awareness and appreciation for Dwight Global and stay informed by:
- Meeting with college representatives and admissions offices throughout the academic year, helping them understand and appreciate our school and student body.
- Visiting colleges and universities throughout the academic year and attending/participating in regional, national and international college admissions counseling conferences and forums.
- Participating in the life of the school beyond the college office, such as by advising a club, chaperoning trips, or by serving on internal committees within Dwight Global and The Dwight Schools network worldwide.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree required
- Prior college admissions experience is highly preferred
- Prior experience reviewing international HS transcripts preferred
- Prior knowledge/experience with NCAA eligibility/athletic recruitment is welcome
- An in-depth knowledge of colleges and universities, as well as a contextual grasp of the current college admissions landscape
- Strong understanding of the US financial aid process as well as financial costs of international universities
- A desire to work intensively and collaboratively with each grade of approximately 85-105 families, eagerly welcoming conversations and encouraging interaction among students, parents, and the college counseling office.
- Strong analytical writing skills
- Strong public speaking skills and the desire to participate in events for students, parents, and colleagues
- A team-oriented approach to all aspects of the college counseling process and a collaborative spirit of engagement in all professional endeavors
- Commitment to building a diverse, equitable, and inclusive school community
- Willingness to engage with and learn from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences
- Experience counseling a range of learners
- Eagerness to contribute positively to the Dwight Global community
- Ability to bring joy, kindness, maturity, and flexibility to the school environment
