Arboreal Management is hiring an Accounting Specialist - Experienced in Construction-Related Software (Remote) to support our growing portfolio by managing construction accounting processes, coordinating with project teams, and ensuring accurate financial reporting across capital projects.
Construction or Real Estate accounting, is a critical part of delivering quality housing on budget and on schedule. Someone who is experienced on Appfolio or any related software is preferred. We believe timely, accurate financial controls paired with practical project knowledge create predictable outcomes for properties and owners.
We are looking for someone who is detail oriented, process-driven, and experienced with construction-related accounting systems. Role Overview
The Accounting Specialist is a remote role responsible for construction-related accounting tasks, including job cost tracking, accounts payable for construction vendors, and reconciling project financials to budgets and general ledger.
Working closely with project managers, property teams, accounting, and our offshore support staff, this role will focus on:
Job costing and budget tracking for capital and renovation projects
Processing subcontractor pay applications and vendor invoices
Reconciling project accounts, retained amounts, and lien waivers
Maintaining clean month-end construction-related close processes
This position is ideal for a hands-on accountant who enjoys partnering with construction teams to maintain tight financial controls and clear reporting.
Key Responsibilities
Job Costing & Budget Management
Set up and maintain job cost structures in construction accounting or ERP systems
Track and reconcile actual costs to project budgets and provide variance analysis
Review and code construction invoices to correct cost codes and funding sources
Accounts Payable & Pay Applications
Review subcontractor pay applications, lien waivers, and supporting documentation
Prepare and process vendor invoices, retainage calculations, and timely payments
Coordinate payment approvals with project managers and ensure compliance with contract terms
Reconciliations & Close
Reconcile project sub-ledgers to the general ledger each month
Maintain accurate retained amounts, accruals, and reserve accounting for projects
Support month-end and year-end close activities related to construction projects
Reporting & Process Improvement
Prepare routine reports and dashboards on project costs, commitments, and cash flow
Document and maintain Standard Operating Procedures for construction accounting processes
Identify opportunities to automate manual tasks and improve accuracy of cost allocation
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with project managers, property operations, and accounting teams to ensure accurate project financials
Coordinate with technology teams to ensure construction data integrates correctly with company systems
Support training for project staff and offshore partners on construction accounting procedures
Qualifications
3+ years of accounting experience with at least some focus on construction, project accounting, or job costing
Hands-on experience with construction-related software or ERPs (e.g., Jonas, Sage 100/300/Intacct with construction modules, Procore Financials, Viewpoint, or similar)
Strong attention to detail and comfort working with numbers, spreadsheets, and reconciliations
Experience processing pay applications, retainage, and managing subcontractor documentation
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work independently in a remote environment and coordinate across distributed teams
The ideal candidate is organized, process-minded, and enjoys partnering with construction teams to prevent budget overruns and ensure accurate financial reporting.
Preferred (but not required)
Formal accounting credential (e.g., CPA, CMA) or progress toward certification
Experience with property management accounting or capital project accounting in multifamily housing
Familiarity with accounts payable automation, electronic invoicing, and integrations between construction platforms and ERPs
Experience working with offshore or distributed support teams
Compensation
Salary: $65,000 – $90,000 depending on experience
