About the role:

The Software Engineer (Drupal + WordPress) helps build and maintain digital platforms that power public-facing government services. In this role, you will design and develop secure, accessible, and scalable web solutions using modern content management systems and integrations. You’ll collaborate with designers, engineers, DevOps specialists, and client stakeholders in an Agile environment to deliver high-quality digital experiences aligned with federal standards. This role contributes directly to Bixal’s mission of improving how government serves people through reliable and user-centered technology.

This is a full-time position contingent on contract award by our client, with a defined performance period of one year with two one-year option periods. This role offers you a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact on a project that aligns with Bixal’s mission of delivering innovative, human-centered solutions. While the role has a fixed duration, we are committed to transparency and collaboration, keeping you informed about contract updates and new opportunities. Compensation:

The salary range for this role is $122,000 – $133,000. In the spirit of transparency, most offers tend to land near the midpoint of the range. We make compensation decisions thoughtfully, considering your experience, the skills you bring, and our commitment to internal equity. Fairness and transparency are core to how we operate.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and maintain enterprise websites using Drupal and WordPress.

  • Build custom themes, modules, plugins, and reusable components aligned with design systems such as the U.S. Web Design System (USWDS).

  • Implement integrations with external systems and APIs including identity providers, analytics platforms, and data services.

  • Collaborate with designers and product teams to deliver responsive, accessible front-end implementations.

  • Contribute to CMS architecture decisions including content modeling, taxonomy, and reusable components.

  • Ensure solutions meet accessibility, security, and performance standards and contribute to engineering best practices.

  • Participate in Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, estimation, and backlog refinement.

  • Conduct code reviews, troubleshoot production issues, and improve system reliability.

  • Work with DevOps teams to support CI/CD pipelines and platform operations.

  • Other relevant duties as qualified and trained to assume.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, 7+ years of professional web development experience, or equivalent practical experience (10 years without degree)

  • Experience building and maintaining web applications and content management platforms, including Drupal and WordPress.

  • Proficiency with PHP, HTML, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), and JavaScript.

  • Experience integrating APIs and third-party systems.

  • Demonstrated understanding of accessibility standards such as Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).

  • Familiarity with design systems such as the U.S. Web Design System (USWDS) or similar component frameworks.

  • Experience working in Agile teams using Git-based workflows.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust security clearance.
