Corrections Expert Witness
We are seeking an experienced Corrections Expert Witness to join our team of forensic professionals. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in correctional operations, jail or prison administration, inmate supervision, facility policies, and use-of-force standards. This role is well suited for a seasoned corrections professional who can apply their operational expertise to analyze incidents within detention facilities and provide objective, well-supported expert opinions in legal matters.
This is a unique opportunity for a highly experienced corrections professional to review complex cases involving detention facilities, evaluate policies and procedures, and provide expert testimony that helps attorneys and courts understand correctional practices and standards of care.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct forensic evaluations of incidents occurring within correctional facilities, including inmate supervision, classification, use of force, medical or mental health response, suicide prevention, and facility safety procedures.
Review case materials such as incident reports, surveillance footage, medical records, use-of-force documentation, training records, and correctional policies to assess compliance with accepted correctional standards.
Prepare detailed written reports and expert opinions supported by correctional best practices, national standards (such as ACA, NCCHC, or DOJ guidelines), and professional experience.
Provide expert witness testimony during depositions, mediations, and trials — explaining correctional procedures, staffing practices, and operational decision-making in a clear and understandable manner.
Consult with legal teams to identify key operational issues, evaluate liability exposure, and assist in developing case strategy related to correctional operations.
Analyze policies and procedures related to inmate supervision, classification systems, staffing levels, facility security protocols, and emergency response practices.
Stay current on correctional standards, constitutional requirements, use-of-force guidelines, inmate safety protocols, and evolving correctional practices.
Requirements
Qualifications:
Extensive experience working in corrections, such as a former Warden, Deputy Warden, Corrections Captain, Superintendent, or senior corrections administrator.
Strong background in jail or prison operations, including inmate supervision, classification, use-of-force policies, facility security procedures, and incident investigations.
Experience reviewing correctional policies and evaluating whether facilities met accepted standards of care in detention settings.
Prior experience conducting internal investigations, incident reviews, or policy development within correctional institutions.
Excellent analytical and report-writing skills, with the ability to evaluate operational decisions and policies in complex situations.
Strong communication and presentation abilities — capable of explaining correctional practices clearly to attorneys, judges, and juries.
Prior expert witness experience in correctional litigation is highly desirable but not required.
Experience working with ACA standards, PREA compliance, use-of-force reviews, inmate supervision protocols, or detention facility administration is strongly preferred.
