Role Description
The Rotating Equipment, Vibration, Dynamics (REVD) mechanical engineer resolves piping, machinery, and structural problems at oil/gas and petrochemical industrial facilities to improve structural reliability and eliminate fatigue concerns. This includes:
- Field acquisition and analysis of vibration data
- Determination of root cause of vibration problems
- Developing vibration control methods to reduce vibration levels
This position requires high competence in the use of the following vibration analysis tools:
- Data acquisition systems
- Accelerometers
- Pressure transducers
- Microphones
- Strain gauges
- Modal testing
- Operating deflection shapes
- Motion amplification
The analytical tools utilized in this position include:
- Hand calculations
- Advanced modal and stress analysis using FEA
The analytical methods include:
- Acceptability evaluations
- Fatigue methods
- Stress methods using the API 579 Fitness for Service Code
- ASME Section VIII Division 2 Design by Analysis Requirements
- ASME B31.3 Process Piping
- Other API machine standards
This position is estimated to travel on average of 25% of the time, however more travel could become available depending on client needs.
Qualifications
- Highly motivated multidisciplinary engineer with a mechanical background
- Interest in developing expertise in fixed equipment and rotating machinery
- Comfortable taking initiative to tackle open-ended problems
- Demonstrates initiative to support expedited client requests and emergency/rush projects
- Ability to execute consulting projects independently and as part of multidisciplinary teams
- Strong working knowledge of:
- Fundamentals of stress analysis, strength of materials, and mechanical vibrations
- Vibration data acquisition and analysis
- Finite element analysis
- API 579 Fitness for Service
- ASME Section VIII Division 2
- ASME B31.3 Process Piping
- API Machine Standards
- Ability to provide project management, analytical, and technical review support
- Willingness to develop required skill-sets under the guidance of rotating equipment subject matter experts
- Minimum of 5 years' experience in Mechanical Engineering in relevant industries
- Ideal candidate will have either a P.E. license or be able to obtain professional license status within 1-2 years
- Desire to perform on-site data collection and vibration testing at client sites
Requirements
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working at a computer
- Able to work comfortably and safely in industrial environments, such as oil refineries
- Ability to work in outdoor environments in ambient conditions
- Climbing ladders
- Carrying backpack with mobile vibration measurement equipment
- May require lifting up to 50 pounds at times
- Able to travel as needed
