POSITION OVERVIEW

Are you a data engineer who is passionate about bitcoin? Do you enjoy leveraging data to empower teammates and clients?

Unchained Capital is hiring a Senior Data Engineer to join our data team to help advance our data stack and the culture around data at Unchained. Our tooling ingests, transforms, and delivers complex data, reporting & analytics products to our teammates and external partners.

Data engineering at Unchained is different to what you might be used to:

• The data, reports, and analytics our team produces are not ancillary or nice-to-haves; they are essential to delivering value and earning revenue. As a result, our data team is central to the success of our business.
• We are extremely dedicated to privacy and security, which are baked into our product, engineering and company culture. As a result, we tend to avoid SaaS in favor of internally developed or hosted tools. For a company our size, our internal data infrastructure is rather sophisticated.
• Our data is relatively small-scale and highly structured, but extremely complex and in many cases very sensitive. So while we care about performance and throughput, we concern ourselves more with accuracy and security.
• While the majority of our work involves data directly related to our business, clients, or infrastructure, we also do fundamental research in bitcoin and economics. Our plots and analyses are featured in articles on our company blog and sometimes grow so popular that they are replicated by other companies in our space.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

• Design, implement, and orchestrate data pipelines and transformations using dbt (SQL), Dagster, and Python, ensuring performance, availability, observability, security, and comprehensive documentation.
• Build and maintain integrations with internal APIs and external data sources, both upstream and downstream of our data pipelines.
• Work with the Data Architect and Head of Data to implement data contracts and governance strategies that facilitate ownership, accountability, and sustainability.
• Demonstrate technical ownership of the dbt project, including architecture decisions, code reviews, and implementation of data quality and observability tooling.
• Produce metrics, reports, and visualizations to empower teams across Unchained, collaborating with stakeholders to understand and fulfill data requirements.
• Mentor team members and promote a culture of continuous learning, sharing best practices in data engineering and analytics.
• Advocate for data-driven decision-making by providing training, sharing insights, and enhancing data literacy across the organization.
• Demonstrate a growth mindset by embracing feedback, challenging assumptions, and fostering open dialogue on data initiatives.
• Apply knowledge of bitcoin fundamentals and data primitives to enhance data products and contribute to cross-functional technical discussions.
• Establish and maintain data infrastructure standards, including monitoring, alerting, and disaster recovery procedures.

WHO YOU ARE

• You have 5+ years of experience in data engineering or a related role with demonstrated technical leadership, ideally within financial services technology.
• You are a passionate Data Engineer with experience in:
• • SQL in an OLAP context
  • Modern data warehousing, data lakes, and data lakehouse architectures
  • dbt
  • Python
  • Data integration and pipeline orchestration
  • Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery
  • Infrastructure-as-code
  • Database performance optimization
• You excel at designing intuitive data models that empower stakeholders to conduct self-service reporting and deep-dive analysis.
• You have experience implementing data contracts, frameworks for governance and data quality control, and scalable architectures.
• You have a strong understanding of data security and privacy, especially in regulated environments.
• You have excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams and articulate technical concepts clearly.

Even Better

• You have an understanding of bitcoin fundamentals and a passion for decentralized finance.
• You have experience with PostgreSQL database or modern warehouse solution, AWS cloud environments, Docker and Kubernetes containerization, and Terraform infrastructure-as-code.
• You have deep expertise in dbt, with proven experience developing, testing, and optimizing data models.
• You have experience using Dagster to orchestrate dbt jobs alongside other data workloads in complex data environments.
